Hinge isn’t ignoring you. Slot 1 is.
If your Hinge likes go straight to unread, the problem is almost never you as a person — it's a signal problem in the first three photos and the first two prompts. Here are the seven reasons we see over and over, and the exact fix for each.
1. Your lead photo doesn't show a face at neutral distance
Hinge shows one photo before anyone taps in. Sunglasses, group shots, ski goggles, or full-body-far-away photos all fail the same test: a stranger can't picture the eye contact.
- Fix: use a chest-up photo, no sunglasses, soft daylight, one clear expression.
- Delete any group photo from slot 1 — even if you look best in it.
2. Every photo has the same expression
Six versions of the same smirk reads as one dimension. A profile that mixes a genuine laugh, a focused-on-something shot, and a calm portrait signals range.
3. Your prompts are opinions with no hook
'I love travel and food' gives nobody anything to reply to. A specific, slightly weird, easy-to-comment-on prompt outperforms every safe answer.
- Replace: 'I love travel.'
- With: 'Best meal I've had this year was a $4 bowl of pho in a strip mall in Houston.'
4. You're stacking three of the same 'proof' photos
Three gym mirror shots, three fish, three suits — a profile becomes a caricature the moment it repeats a signal. One is a data point, three is a personality flag.
5. The bio reads like a résumé
Job title + city + height + '6'2 if that matters to you' is the least memorable configuration on the app. Trade one line of stats for one line of taste.
6. You never show a second person in frame
One photo (never the lead) with a friend or family member signals that other humans choose to spend time with you. Missing entirely reads as isolation.
7. You have no CTA prompt
The 'Two truths and a lie' or 'This year, I really want to…' prompts give the other person a scripted first message. Without one, they have to invent a reason to open — and most won't.
